There are many options for Thai Food in Singapore, and Ah Loy Thai restaurant is definitely one of the best when it comes to cheap and good Thai Food.
Even though Ah Loy Thai does not have nice ambiance like the other Thai fine dining restaurants, it serves good Thai food at very affordable prices. We are talking about $5-10 for most of the items on their menu (plus they don’t have GST and service charge). The prices here are even cheaper than some of the Thai Eateries at Golden Mile Complex.
Is a $15 plate of Phat Thai in a nice Thai restaurant really three times better than a $5.50 one from A-Roy Thai’s? No, you are merely paying for the rental, wages, and of course ambiance. In any case, Ah Loy Thai’s Phad Thai was good, but I preferred the one from Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant.
I had wanted to visit A-roy Thai for a long time as my friends had been raving about their cheap and good Thai food. One of them repeatedly emphasised that Ah Loy Thai has the best calamari in Singapore. With that in mind, I had to order the Fried Calamari ($6.40) when I was there for lunch recently.
I am not sure if it was a case of high expectations, but the calamari did not wow me. Don’t get me wrong, they were fresh and tasty, but not out-of-this-world good.
On the other hand, I would certainly recommend Ah Loy Thai’s Pineapple Rice ($5.50). If you are working nearby and want to have a quick lunch, go for the Pad Thai or Pineapple rice.
There were many items that we wanted to order from Ah Loy Thai Restaurant‘s menu. It was a tough choice between the Tom Yam Soup, Thai Mango Salad and Green Curry. In the end, we decided to have the Green Curry ($6) and save the other dishes for the next visit.
I am sure there are many of you who are big fans of A-Roy Thai, but at the same time, this is probably one of the best kept secret restaurants for most people. Ah Loy Thai at Shaw Leisure Gallery is definitely the place if you are looking for a nice Thai Restaurant to satisfy your Pad Thai and Tom Yam Soup cravings.

another must try is the seafood vermicelli!
Aroy Dee at Sunshine Plaza is quite good too
A-Roy Thai at Funan is excellent!!!
I love Ah Loy’s tom yum fried rice!
The popular calamari from Ah Loy is the butter calamari, not the fried one. Made that mistake as well the first time I went there on a friend’s reccomendation.
Are you reviewing A-roy Thai, if so, which outlet?
And if you’re reviewing A-roy Thai, then why do you keep referring to it as Ah Loy Thai – I hope you’re not being cute at the expense of accuracy of the restaurant’s name – afterall are you reviewing the restaurant or what?
You should try the Mango Salad at your next visit!
Ah Loy’s best dist for me is the Tom Yam fried rice, the thai mango chicken, and butter calamari are mouth watering. i also love the fish maw soup which is affordable and delicious.
the blogger has inaccuracies. 1. they aren’t well known for their pineapple rice. 2. calamari not out of the world? that’s becos blogger is eating the wrong dish! dud.. the butter calamari is absolutely superb. 3. err. Shaw leisure gallery? so fanciful name ah.. just say Shaw Tower la!
They’ve 2 types of calamari. Have you tried the Fried Butter Calamari? Cause it’s divineeeeee!
& I agree with Ah Loy fan that the pineapple rice isn’t good. At all. In fact, my friends & I’d never want to order that again. It’s not flavourful with pineapples at all.
