Ugly desserts are the underrated contenders of the desserts world, because they may not be as good looking as those flowery and bombastic desserts that seem to be flooding your social media feeds now. You must have come across beautiful desserts that look good on the outside, but disappointing when you take your first bite.
Not all desserts need to look pretty to be delicious, and the desserts in this list will prove this statement right. Rainbow cakes? Cake shakes? Bingsus? Ugly desserts are the newest thing – the ‘uglier’ the better.
Here are 10 of the Ugliest Desserts in Singapore that we promise you taste so much better than they look.
#1 AND ALL THINGS DELICIOUS – STICKY DATE PUDDING
Sticky Date Puddings have generally never been as good-looking as other desserts, but we all know that it is one of the best tasting desserts out there.
And All Things Delicious’s Sticky Date Pudding might look plain and boring on the outside, but once you sink your teeth in it, you will be blown away. The sweetness and saltiness of this cake is at a perfect balance.

#2 CLUB STREET SOCIAL – NUTELLA BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING
This is a top contender in this list for one reason – it is probably the prettiest yet ugliest dish at the same time. What do we mean? We are sure a part of you is drooling over the oozing Nutella, but at the same time, taken aback by its unstructured look.
But as we’ve said, a good dessert doesn’t have to look good, as long as it tastes good and Club Street Social has aced this dessert of theirs to perfection.

#3 JAMIE’S ITALIAN – JAMIE’S TIRAMISU
Jamie’s Italian has many crazy desserts available on their menu and the Jamie’s Tiramisu is certainly not the best looking one. Nevertheless, it is one of the most popular desserts here.
The tiramisu is not overly dense and extremely tasty. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, right?

#4 LANA CAKE SHOP – CHOCOLATE CAKE
This has been dubbed as one of the best chocolate cakes in Singapore and we could not agree more. Despite its plain-looking exterior that has zero physical appeal, what mattered was its taste and Lana Cake Shop certainly nailed it. Who says this block of brown won’t make it?

#5 NUDE SEAFOOD – BROWNIE
A seafood place as such that focuses on mains is the kind of place that we would least expect to be impressed by their desserts. But their homemade Brownies (S$3) proved us wrong. It was easily the best we have tasted in Singapore, and you need to try it to believe it!

#6 RIDER’S CAFE – DEATH BY CHOCOLATE CAKE
As its name suggests, it is not for the faint-hearted. The Death by Chocolate Cake from Rider’s Cafe is every chocolate enthusiast’s wildest dream, despite its not-so-appealing appearance.
Rich in chocolate-y goodness, evened out by the ice cream, this dessert certainly wins a sexy nod from us for its decadance.

#7 SALT TAPAS & BAR’S CHURROS
Churros are more often than not gorgeous, right? Well, Salt Tapas & Bar’s rendition might break that tradition. Nonetheless, be wow-ed by them for they are one of the best churros you can find in Singapore. Gentle reminder that looks ain’t everything, people.

#8 SHELTER IN THE WOODS – RASPBERRY SORBET
Doesn’t this quirky concoction look like a… sea urchin? Well, as gimmicky as it looks, we have to admit that it was a really refreshing treat. Damn those meringue spikes; we love them!

Shaped like Awfully Chocolate’s iconic super-stacked cake, we were initially rather skeptical about this simple-looking slice of cake. Thankfully, this cake turned out to be much better than it looks, and the moistness of the cake really complimented the rich gula melaka sauce. Now, we are hooked.

#10 STRICTLY PASTRY – UGLY SUE
For a mere S$3, we couldn’t help but wonder just how good this is. We can be pretty judgmental like that. Its name was apt; it is definitely not the best looking cake on display.
Upon first bite, we were sold. We just wanted more and more until we gobbled the whole thing up. It is no wonder Ugly Sue is the top selling cake here at Strictly Pastry.
